Have you ever wondered what else is in the responsorial psalm we hear at Mass? The psalms are used extensively in Christian prayer. In this Bible study, we will look at the general organization of the book of Psalms and then take examples of each of the major types of psalms: praise, lament, thanksgiving, wisdom, royal, and confidence. We will discuss the role of the psalms in ancient Jewish prayer as well as the history of the psalms in Christian worship, such as in the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours.
Phil Chenier will facilitate the sessions on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m., September 21 through November 16. Phil will summarize the material in the lesson each week for the first half of the sessions, followed by discussion of prepared questions in the second half. We will also try to find some good examples of singing or chanting as we hear in the responsorial psalms each Sunday. The cost of this Bible study is $15 (please call the office for financial assistance.)
Register below and pay online HERE, or bring a check for $15 to the first class. Registration forms are available in the gathering space.
