In every celebration for the dead, the Church attaches great importance to the reading of the word of God. The readings teach remembrance of the dead, convey the hope of being gathered together again in God's kingdom, and encourage the witness of Christian life.
You will choose four readings for the Funeral Mass, but you only need to find readers for three (you may choose one person for all three.) The presider will read the Gospel. Find the selections below.
1. 1st reading from the Old Testament
2. 2nd reading from the New Testament
3. Gospel reading
4. Prayer of the Faithful
Music selected for a Mass of Christian Burial should connect to Christ's passion, death, and resurrection. The texts of the selections should support, console, and uplift the grieving. They should create a spirit of hope in Christ's victory over death.
You will make many music choices for the Funeral Mass. Click here to see the music selections.
